I was probably four or five when i fell off a ledge while playing and my jaw and teeth was severely shattered. I had to undergo surgery and what remained were scars reminding me of that eventful day. The fall created this deep rooted fear of heights such that if i were to stand on a surface just about a few feet off the ground, i would start feeling dizzy.. I knew i had to overcome this someday. A few years ago, my wife and i were watching Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, a popular bollywood movie about three friends on a road trip across Spain performing daring stunts to overcome their fears.. These included deep sea diving, skydiving and running with the bulls.. We decided that we got to try this. When we were deciding on our honeymoon, we decided it would be either dubai or bali and chose the latter. With the clear waters and amazing marine life, we did the scuba diving in Bali. (Read bout it here) It turned out to be an experience of a lifetime. The thrill of ticking one more item off the bucket list drew us to researching skydive operators in Malaysia and we chanced upon Skydive Langkawi.
Jumping off a plane at a height of 10000ft over the picturesque islands of langkawi, soaking in the sights of thailand over the horizon and landing softly on the Tanjung Rhu beach… What more can you expect. We booked our VIP package for two, got picked up from our hotel and had our security and jump briefing by 10am and we were up in the air soon after. A rickety small aircraft stripped off its seats gave me the chills.. As if it wasn’t enough, the plane did not have any doors on it. My wife got pushed in towards the tail and i was sitting closer to the “door”… With every few hundred feet of altitude gain, i could feel my heart pounding.. i was breaking a sweat even in the cold weather up in the clouds. As we approached the jump altitude, the instructors gave us one last briefing, checked our harness to make sure we are secure.. Feet out of the plane, eyes on the horizon, 1…2…3…… and JUMP !!!!
The experience of free fall was exhilarating and lasted a few seconds, It wasn’t until i saw the video after the jump, i realised how long it was. The experience of a life time and i had just done it.. Jump out of a plane.. I could feel the adrenaline rush and at the same time, i just screamed my heart out.. Words fell short in describing the experience. I even managed to observe a “glory” phenomenon while sailing down. I would strongly recommend anyone to try this atleast once in their lifetime. And PS: Take the videos and photos package.. You will not regret the decision. These days, everytime we fly, we look out the window, remember our jump and say to each other “I Still can’t imagine we jumped out of a freaking plane”.
Thank you Skydive Langkawi for giving us memories for a lifetime.
